It was a battle between tennis veterans at the Peugeot Philippines Tennis Open (PPTO) Manila leg last February 1-7, 2016, at the Valle Verde Country Club. Thirty-seven year-old netter Rolando Ruel, Jr. decisively defeated Patrick John Tierro with the score of 6-2, 6-1, to bag the PPTO Manila leg’s men’s singles title. Ruel is currently the Philippines’ No. 5 player, while Tierro is the Ateneo de Manila University men’s tennis team head coach and Philippines’ no. 4 netter.
Meanwhile, National University tennis team coaching staff Ronard Joven and Karl Santamaria showed the youngsters how it’s done by beating San Beda’s Noel Damian and Davis Alano in an exciting 6-4, 7-5 match.
In the women’s singles division, Philippines’ No. 4 Marian Capadocia dueled with No. 3 Khim Iglupas for the championship title. After a heart-stopping three rounds, Capadocia emerged victorious with the score of 6-0, 2-6, 6-0.
Iglupas didn’t finish the tournament with a total loss as she once again battled with Capadocia at the women’s doubles division. Marian teamed up with her sister Jella Jade, while Iglupas partnered with Shaira Hope Rivera. At the end, the Iglupas-Rivera tandem beat the Capadocia sisters to the score of 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
“We’re very pleased with the roster of talented and world class tennis players that have participated in the five qualifying legs conducted nationwide. We are excited to see them up the ante and battle it out at the PPTO finals,” Glen Dasig, Peugeot Philippines President, said.
Aside from cash prizes from Peugeot Philippines, Total and Smart, and giveaways from tournament sponsor, Wilson, champions of the PPTO Manila leg will complete the roster of players, joining the winners of the four (4) other regional qualifying legs, who will compete in the National Finals to be held in Manila in March 2016.
