Samsung Electronics Philippines Corporation (SEPCO) and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) have partnered to launch the TESDA-Samsung Electronics Servicing Laboratory. The partnership aims to train students on Consumer Electronics Servicing, to give them an edge in the competitive job market, and to improve service delivery in the electronics industry by developing the workforce.
The TESDA-Samsung Electronics Servicing Laboratory was launched last June 17, 2015 at the Electronics Workshop of the TESDA Women’s Center in Taguig City. The lab was earlier conceptualized through a memorandum of agreement between TESDA and SEPCO in December 2014. The agreement includes a donation from SEPCO of necessary serviceable equipment, tools, and training materials to be used for training students and a seven-day Training of Trainers.
Under the partnership, Samsung’s technical inputs will be integrated and implemented into TESDA’s curriculum for Consumer Electronics Servicing. Trainees will be taught about the repair and maintenance of audio and video products and systems, domestic appliances, and cellular phones. They will also be honed on participating in workplace communication, working in a team environment, and practicing career professionalism.
Trainees will be given a monthly allowance by Samsung Electronics Philippines in the amount of P7,079.00 (P321.75 per day). This daily allowance is 75% of the minimum wage in NCR per DTS requirements.
The TESDA-SEPCO lab is equipped with tools, gadgets, appliances and electronic equipment that trainees can use to acquire know-how and skills needed to become a competent electronics technician. “The laboratory will be a hub for learning, building, playing, creating, innovating, and we could not thank Samsung enough for working with TESDA to put this up,” said TESDA Director General Joel Villanueva.
Left to Right: Teodoro Pascua (TESDA Deputy Director General for Operations), Joel Villanueva (TESDA Director General), Seungho Jee (Director of Service Operations for Samsung Electronic Philippines Corporation), and Maria Clara Ignacio (TESDA Women’s Center).
“Through this program, there will be no shortage of skilled labor for the consumer electronics industry. This also means there will be more jobs available for more Filipinos,” said Arlita Tayko Narag, Head of Samsung Philippines’ Public Affairs Group.
The program provides an opportunity to specialize in the repair of Samsung products such audio-video equipment, domestic appliances such as washing machine, microwave oven, vacuum cleaner, hand-held phones, refrigerator, and air-conditioning units.
Currently, there are 26 female trainees enrolled in the Consumer Electronics Servicing under the Dual Training System (DTS). Trainees will undergo training for a total of 5 months: 2 months in-center training at TESDA Women’s Center, and 3 months in-plant training with accredited Samsung centers.
Trainees started training on May 4 and will be deployed to Samsung Service Centers for their actual work exposure on August 24.
