Smartmatic, a London-based elections technology provider, together with CGI, an independent Information Technology (IT) solutions firm, will be delivering software and technical infrastructure for the electronic counting of votes in the 2020 London Elections.
Specifically, Smartmatic and CGI developed an e-counting solution that will ensure quick, accurate, transparent, and accountable results.
The technology will be used on three elections taking place on May 2020: the London Mayoralty race, 14 Constituency Assemble members, and 11 London-wide Assemble members. The new system will allow London voters to cast their ballot in-person or via mail.
“The GLA [Greater London Authority] team is looking forward to working with CGI, Smartmatic and partners to deliver an effective and accurate e-count,” said Mary Harpley, Greater London Returning Officer at the GLA.
Smartmatic shared the same excitement in working with the GLA and CGI for the upcoming polls. “”It is truly rewarding to work with Election Administrators that share Smartmatic’s commitment to transparent and accessible elections,” said Antonio Mugica, Chief Executive Officer of Smartmatic. “London elections will employ modern technology that is secure and reliable and will enhance citizens’ trust in the process and strengthen democracy,” he further explained.
Smartmatic technology has processed over 3.7 billion votes in election projects on five continents. Recently, Smartmatic was awarded a contract to assist the Los Angeles County -the largest elections jurisdiction in the United States- in the development, manufacturing and implementation of the County’s new elections system by 2020. Smartmatic also explored using blockchain technology to implement secure “serverless” polls for a referendum in Norway.
