Leading mobile services provider Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) has turned over fifty (50) bicycles to the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) to support Filipino athletes who have been affected by the pandemic.
Aside from the bikes, Smart also donated face masks and face shields to help protect the athletes from the virus.
The POC will also receive Smart retailer SIM cards for select athletes. These SIM cards will enable them to start a small loading business to help support the needs of their families.
“We have always believed in the power of sports to make the lives of Filipinos better. The values that we learn – such as teamwork, mindfulness, patience, grace under pressure, and discipline, among others – are important elements to the formula of success,” said Alfredo S. Panlilio, Smart Communications President and CEO and PLDT Chief Revenue Officer.
“We are here to serve and not be served. We owe it to the athletes who have sacrificed themselves in order to represent the country,” added Panlilio, who also serves as the First Vice President of the POC.
“We would like to thank Smart for their donation. These bikes, masks, and livelihood aid will equip our athletes to help them get back on track in terms of their mobility, protection, and livelihood, but more importantly, these can encourage them to go further and be better as we prepare for tournaments in the future,” said POC President and head of the Integrated Cycling Federation of the Philippines (PhilCycling) Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino.
PLDT and Smart have always been at the forefront when it comes to supporting Filipino athletes — either through the MVP Sports Foundation or leadership in various organizations – in order to lend a helping hand to key agencies in nation-building through sports.
