The Lyceum of the Philippines’ team won both the “Tribute to the Present” and “Tribute to the Future” theme categories (that’s two out three categories), making them the overall champion at the 12th annual Goldilocks Intercollegiate Cake Design Challenge (ICDC) held last March 3 at the Fashion Hall of SM Megamall. The team takes home a baking lab worth Php 250,000 for their school, and Php 20,000 worth of Goldilocks gift certificates. The team from Western Institute of Technology Iloilo won the “Tribute to the Past” theme category. The Goldilocks ICDC is an annual and hotly anticipated culinary event, with participants competing in front of a live audience a la Iron Chef.
This year’s theme encouraged students to interpret “timeless aspects” (sweet memories, special moments and dreams) into their cake design. 100 schools submitted entries in the pre-selection process, out of which six schools qualified for the live kitchen-stage: the University of Batangas, Saint Anne College of Lucena, Pangasinan State University, Holy Cross of Davao College, and Western Institute of Technology Iloilo.
Goldilocks, the leading bakeshop over five decades, provided the materials and ingredients along with co-sponsor Avoset Whip N’ Cream. Judging this year’s ICDC were renowned chef Jackie Ang Po, pastry chef Penk Ching, Patrick Tong of Avoset, and Mille Dizon from the SM Group.
While the ICDC was the focal and culminating activity of the day, cake-inspired, fun-filled activities dotted the Fashion Hall of SM Megamall, including hands-on demo’s and workshops by professional pastry-chefs, a Goldilocks decorate-your-cake (DYC) corner, and amazing cake displays. Goldilocks endorser Judy Ann Santos-Agoncillo, graced the activity as the special guest.
The Goldilocks Intercollegiate Cake Decorating Challenge is an annual culinary event where qualified participating school teams design cake entries following event-given themes under time pressure and in front of live audiences. ICDC past champions include St. Anne College of Lucena (2017 and 2016) and Western Institute of Technology Iloilo (2015).
