As millions struggle with involuntary hunger, Globe and partners launch the Hapag Movement

Even as the country’s economy gradually improves with the easing pandemic, millions of Filipinos still grapple with hunger.

In the first quarter of the year, 3.1 million Filipino families said they experienced involuntary hunger at least once, based on the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey. Unemployment was on a 3-month high at 6% in May, while inflation accelerated to 6.1% in June, a nearly 4-year high year on year.

Prices of basic goods have risen. Pandesal, the poor man’s bread, is shrinking. And millions of Filipinos are living day to day, wondering where to get the next meal.

Leading digital solutions platform Globe believes that addressing involuntary hunger is one of the first steps towards achieving inclusive recovery from the debilitating effects of the global health crisis.

Globe is leveraging technology in its fight against hunger. Through the Hapag Movement, the company provides a platform for everyone to help, from individuals to multi-sectoral partners.

“Globe helps enable holistic and sustainable development using technology as a primary tool. Local and international donors can come together using our digital platforms to help alleviate hunger. With the support of our partners, we don’t stop at feeding programs alone, we will continue this initiative with livelihood opportunities especially those in grassroots communities,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer.

Together with partners, Ayala Foundation, Caritas Philippines, Tzu Chi Foundation, and World Vision Philippines, Globe aims to help 100,000 families who have lost their livelihood, displaced workers recovering from the pandemic, and those who remain vulnerable to the effects of poverty through supplemental feeding programs and sustainable livelihood training.

These include technical and vocational training, upcycling programs for mothers, job placement initiatives for college scholars, capacity-building initiatives and self-sufficiency programs.

The company also connects members of partner communities to shared services enterprise Asticom Group of Companies for access to available jobs. This is on top of capacity-building efforts for micro-entrepreneurs implemented by its partners.

The Hapag Movement is part of Globe’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly UN SDG No. 9, which highlights the roles of infrastructure and innovation as crucial drivers of economic growth and development.
